Strange News: Portland Principal States Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches Taste Like Racism

Portland, Oregon school principal Verenice Gutierrez has been taking part in seminars to help teachers decode the "subtle language of racism" in things as everyday as that lunchtime classic, the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. "What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?" posits Gutierrez, according to the Portland Tribune.

Gutierrez, who is the principal at Harvey Scott K-8 School in Northeast Portland, will be spending the week with other educators in seminars featuring so-called "Courageous Conversations," part of a district-wide diversity training program that helps non-minority educators decode and understand their "white privilege" in things as seemingly innocuous as sandwiches.
