The 46th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards
Steven Tyler & Rihanna Perform at Country Awards; Taylor Swift Wins Big
It was called the Academy of Country Music Awards, but there were some notable non-country names on stage during Sunday night's telecast from Las Vegas. American Idol judge Steven Tyler ended up joining Carrie Underwood for a duet on her song "Undo It," and then Aerosmith's classic "Walk this Way," as the audience screamed with delight. The duet took on a mildly creepy tone, however, when Tyler sang the line "Just gimme a kiss" directly to Carrie, and tried several times to kiss her. By the way, "Undo It" was written by another former American Idol judge, Kara DioGuardi.
Meanwhile, Rihanna, sporting a bright red pixie cut and a white leather dress with a fringed top, joined Jennifer Nettles, lead singer of the country duo Sugarland, to perform her new single "California King Bed." Rihanna must've been nervous, intimidated or drowned out by the band, or all three, because it appeared that Jennifer sang rings around her on the tune. In an additional mixing of genres, the country group Zac Brown Band was joined onstage by legendary singer/songwriter James Taylor, who sang his classic "Sweet Baby James," as well as the Zac Brown Band's song "Colder Weather."
Finally, Taylor Swift won the biggest award of the night, Entertainer of the Year. She told the audience she was "just losing my mind," since it was the first time she'd ever won that particular trophy. That award is fan voted, and Taylor said, "The fact that this comes from the fans makes it so beautiful...you are the best thing that has ever happened to me. Thank you so much!"
