Wednesday, May 5, 2009 the #1 Google search in America was “Banana Boat Rat.” A lot of people wondered why. The interest caused a ripple through the media and a hit by the Associated Press titled “Banana Boat Rat Runs Amok, Kills Family Cat.”

Those listening to Cadillac Jack in Atlanta already knew that a listener told a story about a Banana Boat Rat during his popular “Make Us Say WOW! Wednesday” segment. The caller testified that a friend had been to Florida on vacation and picked up a stray dog and brought it home to live with her family and their cat. After a night out for dinner, the family returns to discover the “dog” attacked the family cat. The family takes the “dog” to the vet to see what is wrong with it and they are told that it is not a “dog” but a Banana Boat Rat. Listeners raced to their computers to Google the animal and see if a picture existed.
